Over the years, several different publishers - Pigots, Whites, Kellys etc - have published an annual directory/gazeteer of all the parishes in the UK - Occold, Suffolk being of particular interest.
These list a description of the parish - civil, legislative and ecclesiastical - and also refer to trains, post offices, notable buildings, prominent citizens and local businesses. Each year provides a slightly different snapshot of the village. Lists of names of those carrying out a business are of particualar interest to historians.
We have currently purchased copies of directories for 1854, 1883, 1888, 1892, 1900, 1912 and 1925 and we may be adding to these. These will be transcribed asap. The reason for transcribing them is two-fold. Firstly, most of them are fairly low quality images of the original and not always easy to read - see below. But more importantly, by transcribing them, the names of people and places will filter through to Internet search engines and become accessible to historians.
Where appropriate, we have added text (Ed: in italics) to help better understand the directory contents.
If anyone out there wishes to help with transcribing, we would be very appreciative - all you need is a word processor. Just Contact Us if interested.
